'Sorrow of Bihar' River Kosi: An overview

It joins the River Ganga in Katihar's Kursela. The total distance between its origin point in the Himalayas and its merger point in the River Ganga in Kursela is 468 km. It crosses from Biratnagar, the second largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu, before entering the Indian territory in Purnia and Katihar.



Rivers with an origination points in Tibet and China are also parts of River Kosi.

In last 250 years, sections of Kosi River were shifted from east to west for about 120 km.

The Nepal government had planned to construct a barrage near Hanuman Nagar to look into this. In 1965, another barrage was proposed near Dagmara to slowdown the flow of water in the river.
