New Delhi: Two Sikhs used their turbans to save four youths from drowning in Punjab over the weekend. The incident came to light after cellphone footage of the incident circulated on social media.

The youths had arrived to immerse Ganesha idols in a canal at Sular Ghat in Sangrur district when they were washed away by an unexpected gush of water.

Inderpal Singh, who was sitting on the bank of the canal and looking on, had the presence of mind to remove his turban and toss one end of it to them.

At the same time Kamalpreet Singh also did the same. He initially wanted to dive in but could not swim. Luckily his turban came to the rescue.

One of the youths said that Inderpal had first tried to pull them out with a wire on the bank. Two of them were saved but the wire broke and Inderpal then used his turban.

Removing the turban is against Sikh tenets except while bathing.

The local administration is planning to felicitate the two bravehearts.
