Guwahati: The Students Federation of India today demanded an inquiry into the alleged denial of entry to the Taj Mahal to a group of girl students from the state.

In a letter to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the SFI claimed that a group of students of Handique Girls College in Guwahati were denied entry to the Taj Mahal by security personnel because they were looking like foreigners.

“They referred to the students as nationals from Nepal and Bangladesh. Also, there were remarks like ‘Where is Assam?' the students body said in the letter.  “It has come to our notice that there have been repeated incidents of discrimination against students from Assam and the Northeast and this incident reflects the same,” SFI state unit president Nirangkush Nath and secretary Ritu Ranjan Das said in the letter.

They demanded that the guilty be punished and the government also ensure that such incidents did not occur in future. One of the students, who refused to be identified, said they had visited the Taj Mahal on a study tour.  The security personnel said since only Assam was mentioned on the cards, it was difficult to establish that they were Indian citizens, she said.
