Gadchiroli (Maharashtra), Apr 12:  Seven people, including a policeman, were killed Friday in a shoot-out between police and alleged Maoist cadres in a village in Gadchiroli district, an official said.

The Maoists had opened fire on a police team near Sindesur village in the eastern part of the district. The police team retaliated, killing at least six, following which others escaped in the thick forest, a Gadchiroli police spokesperson said.

Gadchiroli in Vidarbha region is over 1,000 km from Mumbai.

The police claimed that four of those killed have been identified as Maoist cadres through their uniforms. Two others in civilian clothes were also suspected to be Maoists. A policeman identified as Govind Farkade, 41, was also killed in the shootout.

Police have also recovered some weapons from the spot.
