Chennai: A 17-year-old girl school student was battling for life in Tamil Nadu Sunday after setting herself on fire over the jailing of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, police said.

The teenager, M. Nagalakshmi, was admitted to the government hospital in Madurai town with around 80 percent burn injuries, a police officer said.

She attempted suicide at her house when her family members were away.

The student reportedly became upset after a special court in Bangalore late Saturday sentenced Jayalalitha to four years in jail for corruption.

Tamil Nadu erupted into violence after the court's conviction. AIADMK supporters protested at DMK headquarters and outside BJP leader Subramanium Swamy's residence. Buses were set on fire. The police have now got situation under control.
