Jammu: Expressing anguish over the Jammu and Kashmir government's "failure" to give due benefit to Sikhs, Shiromani Akati Dal (SAD) National yesterday demanded extension of the National Minority Act, 1992 to the state and reservation of seats in Legislature for the community.

"We express anguish over the failure of the Omar Abdullah government. The government has continuously deprived Sikhs of legitimate benefit by not extending the National Minority Act, 1992 to the state, thereby avoiding implementation of national schemes for benefits of the minority," SAD National working president Gurdev Singh told reporters here yesterday.

The legitimate demands of minority Sikhs had been continuously ignored for over 11 years by successive governments, he said.

Hostile attitude of the political class towards Sikhs has caused resentment among the members of the community and they have been alienated from the mainstream, he claimed.

"Sikhs are being continuously discriminated in employment, promotions, transfers and postings," he alleged.
