Russia-Ukraine war: PM Modi likely to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin tonight

Earlier, the Indian embassy in Ukraine said special flights arranged to head to Kyiv to pick up Indian nationals were cancelled as the country's airspace was closed.

PM Modi likely to speak to Russian President Putin

Russia-Ukraine Latest updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to speak to the Russian President Vladimir Putin tonight. The news comes amidst heightened global tensions after the Russian military actions in Ukraine have triggered panic around the world. During the telephonic conversation, he is likely to raise the issue of Indian students stranded in Ukraine and the current crisis. 

On Thursday evening at about 7 pm, PM Modi also held an emergency meeting to discuss the current situation arising out of Russia's attack on Ukraine. The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and other top government officials. 

The Indian Embassy in Kiev has issued an advisory for students and Indian citizens living in Ukraine urging them not to move out and stay wherever they are. The embassy has also asked the students and citizens in Kiev to stay in touch with the embassy via its official social media handles. 

Earlier, an Air India plane which was sent to bring back students from Kiev, had to return because of missile attacks. Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have said that the government is reviewing options to evacuate Indians and students via the neighbouring countries like Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania but before taking any final decision, the government is evaluating all possible actions.
