Jammu: The one-man judicial commission tasked with holding a probe into the Kishtwar violence is set to finally begin its inquiries after Justice (retd) RC Gandhi arrived there yesterday for the purpose, officials said.

“Justice (retd) Gandhi arrived in Kishtwar district late in the afternoon... He did not meet anybody today and will tomorrow begin the probe,” officials said.

Three persons were killed while over 20 others were injured in the violence in Kishtwar on August 9, which also saw some 150 business establishments and vehicles gutted by arsonists.

Gandhi is scheduled to hold talks with police officials, civilian authorities and locals as part of his probe, they said.

He will also visit the places where violence occurred and also ascertain whether there were any administrative lapses in the handling of the situation.

The state government had ordered a probe by the retired High Court judge on August 23 with the report to have been filed within a month, of which 20 days have already passed.

Curfew was clamped in Kishtwar for 12 days with Army having been deployed there to bring the situation under control.
