Chennai: Madras High Court yesterday granted three more weeks to authorities for filing compliance report in the matter of removal of illegal hoardings and digital banners in the city, but warned that the officials would have to face contempt proceedings in case of failure.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, passing interim orders on a contempt petition by Social activist “Traffic” Ramaswamy, allowed the plea of Government Pleader S T S Moorthy and directed him to file the compliance report before August 27.

Failure to file compliance report will lead to contempt proceedings, the bench warned.

On a PIL by Ramasamy, the court had earlier directed the concerned authorities to remove the unauthorised hoardings and digital banners which were obstructing free flow of traffic and causing hindrance to the pedestrians.

Ramaswamy in his contempt petition submitted that the authorities had not implemented the court orders and still the hoardings were yet to be removed and sought to punish them for contempt of court.

When the petition came up for hearing, the Government Pleader sought three weeks of time to file compliance report which prompted the bench to say “Any failure to do so will result in summoning the officer concerned to the court”.

The court then posted the matter for further hearing to August 27.
