Quake hits northeast India

Shillong: A low intensity earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook India's northeastern states and parts of Myanmar on Saturday, authorities said.The quake occurred at 10.09 pm. There were no immediate reports of casualties

Shillong: A low intensity earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook India's northeastern states and parts of Myanmar on Saturday, authorities said.


The quake occurred at 10.09 pm. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

According to the Regional Seismological Centre here, the epicentre was along the India-Myanmar border in Manipur.

The tremor was also felt in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

India's northeast is considered the world's sixth most earthquake-prone belt.

The northeast has seen some of the biggest quakes in history. In 1897, the Shillong-epicentred quake measured 8.2 on the Richter scale. In 1950, 8.7 Assam quake forced the mighty Brahmaputra river to change its course. In September 2011, Sikkim underwent heavy damage after an earthquake hit the state.
