New Delhi: One of the most awaited books of the year is President Pranab Mukherjee's ‘The Dramatic Decade: The Indira Gandhi Years'. This book will go on sale on the First Citizen's birthday i.e. December 11. For first 21 days the book will be available online exclusively. After that readers can visit their local bookstore for the hard copy.
What makes this book exciting is the fact that it has been written by a former Congressman, hence will be a first- person account of the Emergency period of India, imposed by the then Prime Minister – Indira Gandhi.
Indira imposed Emergency for national security, but it still haunts as the darkest period in Indian democracy. One of the cruel incidents of the time was the mass-sterilisation campaign headed by Sanjay Gandhi. The entire campaign was messed up due to mismanagement.
Before quitting active politics to contest the Presidential elections, Pranab Mukherjee was a veteran Congress leader. He has headed several important posts like Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and handled key ministries like Foreign, Defence, Commerce and Finance under different Prime Ministers of Congress.
