Kolkata : Asserting that the US was stepping up efforts to increase the number of young women studying in her country, Ambassador to India Nancy Powell Friday said it is paramount that more women from India receive an international education.

"It is of paramount importance to me that we increase this number and see more women taking advantage of the opportunity to receive an international education. We can and we need to do better," Powell said during her address at a girls' school in the city.

Observing that education has become one of the main pillars in the India-US bilateral partnership, Powell said the US is stepping up its efforts increase the number of young women studying in the country.

"We now have 'Education USA Centers' in seven locations throughout India to help you get clear and accurate information about opportunities to study in the US. We also have a number of US Government sponsored programmes for students," she said.

She also said that only 30 percent of about 100,000 Indian students studying in the US are women.

"We all share a responsibility to ensure that all women are provided equal opportunities and welcomed as partners in global progress. When women succeed, communities and countries succeed," added Powell.
