New Delhi, Apr 21: Amnesty International India Sunday called for an impartial probe into the alleged misconduct of police officials in the case of abduction and rape of a five-year-old girl in the national capital.

"This case shows the appalling extent of indifference in the police to violence against women and girls, and the inadequacy of internal processes to ensure professional conduct," said G. Ananthapadmanabhan, chief executive of Amnesty International India, in a statement.

The five-year-old girl was abducted April 15 and kept hostage for two days without food and water in a room in which the attacker lived, on the ground floor of the building in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar, in which the victim's family also stayed. The girl, who was repeatedly raped and brutalised, suffered severe injuries to her private parts.

"The police must be held accountable for their shocking levels of apathy. Those who fail to do their job must be held accountable. Mere changes in the law are not enough. Robust implementation is essential," he added.

The girl is being treated at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and is recuperating.
