New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will continue his four-decade-old practice of observing the nine-day rituals of fasting during the ‘Navratri' even on his trip to the United States, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) confirmed on Monday morning.
Modi will embark on a five-day visit to the US from Friday.
During this nine-day of fast, Modi will only be drinking water and will do yoga, meditation and puja at dusk.
According to reports, US President Barack Obama is likely to host Modi for a small working dinner on his arrival in Washington on September 29 from New York. The US President's dinner meet is not a usual practice and is normally accorded to foreign visitors on state visits.
The NRIs too have organised a publicised reception for the Prime Minister at the Madison Square Gardens on September 28.
It should be noted that Modi, in his book Saakshibhav, had earlier describe the act as self-purification exercise which gives him strength and ability to converse with 'Ambe ma' (Goddess Durga) every night.
The nine-day festival of Navratri is dedicated to the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga. This year, the festival will begin from September 25.
