PM Modi launches Vehicle Scrappage Policy at Investor Summit in Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernization Program or the Vehicle Scrapping Policy will help phase out unfit and polluting vehicles in an environment-friendly manner. Addressing the Investor Summit in Gujarat via video conference, he said that the Vehicle Scrappage Policy will play a key role in the 'Waste to Wealth' programme.

He said that the policy intends to create scrapping infrastructure in the form of automated testing stations and registered vehicle scrapping facilities across the country.

"The manner in which technology is changing, be it our lifestyle or our economy - there will be a lot of changes in both of them. Amid these changes, it is also important to protect our environment, our land, our resources, our raw material," the Prime Minister said.

"We are about to enter 75th year of Independence. The next 25 years are very important for the country, from this point onward. In these 25 years, changes are going to take place in our way of working, in our daily lives, in our businesses," he said.

He said that modernity in mobility reduces burden of travel and transportation. It is also helpful for economic development.

"We can work on technology and innovation in the future but the natural resources we get from mother earth are not in our hands. So, on one hand, India is looking for new possibilities through Deep Ocean Mission & on the other hand, it is also encouraging Circular Economy," he added.

"This policy will deeply benefit our middle class," he said. A certificate will be issued on the scrappage of old cars. It will ensure that these people get discount on buying new cars and benefit on taxes, he added.

The Investor Summit is being organised to invite investment for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure under the Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernization Program or the Vehicle Scrapping Policy. The summit is being organised by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Gujarat government in Gandhinagar. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were present on the occasion.
