Ahmedabad, Aug 2:  A public interest litigation has been filed in the Gujarat High Court seeking direction to authorities for disbursal of crop insurance money to farmers who faced crop failure because of last year's bad monsoon.

The division bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala yesterday asked Gujarat Parivartan Party general secretary Gordhan Zadafia, who has filed the PIL through advocate Dipak Kiritsata, to submit further data on the issue and fixed the hearing after two weeks.

Zadafia has said that due to inadequate rain, a large number of farmers lost their kharif crop. They were paying regular premiums under National Agriculture Crop Insurance Scheme, but were deprived of crop insurance money.

In March, Gujarat government had declared 3,918 villages in 10 districts as affected areas due to insufficient rain.

The petition has a list of farmers of Bhavnagar district who lost their crop and were awaiting insurance money.

The High Court yesterday asked the petitioner to file an affidavit giving details of farmers in other districts who had not received their crop insurance money.
