Delhi violence: PFI president Parvez, Secretary Illiyas arrested

Delhi Police Special Cell on Thursday arrested Popular Front of India (PFI) President Parvez and Secretary Illiyas, in connection with alleged PFI-Shaheen Bagh link. The two members of the PFI were reportedly taken into custody on charges of hatching a conspiracy to incite riots in northeast Delhi.

Addressing the media on Delhi violence, Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa said the law and order situation in Delhi is completely normal now. "Senior officers are continuously monitoring the situation."

"We are doing an analysis of all footage; face recognition technology is being used to identify people. Many people have come forward to record their statements. SIT and Loc police are conducting the probe," he said.

On violence in the North East district, he said till now, the Delhi police have registered 712 FIRs and more than 200 accused have been arrested. "We have received a lot of videos that will help us in the investigation," he added.

The police had earlier arrested PFI member Mohd Danish for hatching conspiracy to incite communal riots.

Earlier yesterday, the Enforcement Directorate has booked suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain, PFI members and some others on charges of money laundering and alleged funding of the recent riots in Delhi.

According to officials, criminal case against Hussain, facing charges of killing an Intelligence Bureau official during the riots in northeast Delhi last month, has been filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the central probe agency.

Similar charges were also pressed against the Popular Front of India (PFI) which is already facing a separate PMLA probe. Hussain is in the custody of Delhi Police at present.

The officials said the federal agency has taken cognisance of a clutch of FIRs filed by Delhi Police's Crime Branch to probe the alleged money laundering and routing of illegal funds by Hussain, PFI and others to purportedly sponsor the communal riots that killed over 50 people.
