New Delhi: In the light of preventing female feoticide, a civil society initiative ‘Girls Counts' has taken most of the e-commerce websites in India under the scanner.
The organization has urged the citizens of India to sign an online petition asking all online shopping platforms to refrain from advertising or selling publications and products that promote gender-biased sex selection.
In India, where the problem of female feoticide have largely remained a discourse, even honourbale Supreme Court has instructed various sites including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft not to promote sex-discrimination by any means of advertisement or sponsorship related to sex selection services. And while we have got all the static set of rules under The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC&PNDT), a few e commerce sites in the country are simply bypassing the order and continuing their profit-making ideologies to work promoting such heinous acts openly.
Many of the search engines and e –commerce sites running in India are giving access to the services related to the sex determination tests and products promoting sex selection for everyone on purchase.
The land which already faces a loss of 6 lakh girls every year due to the practice of sex recognition before birth is also one of the worst areas in terms of women security all over the world. While lower female sex ratio triggers to sex ratio imbalances throughout the country, it can also lead to crime against women viz. rape, trafficking, polyandry and many more horrendous acts.
Though the online world explicitly caters towards money making, high is the need to have a vouch-out on acts promoting sex selection, at least in India.
