Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik had a slip of tongue yesterday sparking controversy saying people involved in power theft should be beaten up by shoes.
“Those indulging in power theft needed to be suitably punished. I say, don't hang them ...bring them at a chowk and use shoe to beat them. This should be done,” he said while addressing a seminar on 'Role of Power in UP's Development'.
He said that checking electricity misuse was essential for ensuring its availability to all and those indulging in power theft should be suitably punished.
“The state government should seriously consider placing strict checks on transmission losses," he said.
"Despite of massive power crunch, India is the only country in the world where its misuse is maximum," Naik said adding that for ensuring the availability of electricity to all, it is essential to check its misuse.
The Governor pointed out that for development, availability of power, good infrastructure and human resources are required.
