Panchkula And Ambala Districts Put On Alert

Panchkula and Ambala districts were on Saturday put on alert as the Ghaggar river was in spate following heavy overnight rains in Chandigarh and adjoining areas.

 The gushing water of Ghaggar swept away three youths in Panchukla district who were later rescued by authorities after several hours of operations, they said.

In Patiala, Sangrur, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar and Mansa districts a total of 67 breaches had been identified out of which works for plugging of 33 breaches had been completed and rest 34 will be done in the next couple of days.

The situation in flood ravaged districts of Punjab and Haryana was fast improving as army personnel, NGOs, villagers and district administration were working round the clock in the affected areas, even though Mansa faced a grim picture, officials said.

 As many as 51 rpt 51 people have died due to the floods in the two states. Medical and vet teams are providing treatment to patients and animals in the affected villages.

Around 21 villages have been badly affected due to the floods in Mansa due to breaches in Ghaggar.

People are being evacuated and accommodated in several relief camps in the flood affected areas, officials said, adding over 6000 patients had been treated for vector borne diseases in Mansa.

The breaches of Ghagger river near village Firozabad would soon be plugged as the situation of floods is now under control.

In Sirsa district where 32,000 acres of land in 47 villages has so far been affected the estimated loss is of more than Rs 165 crore, Sirsa Deputy Commissioner C G Rajnikanthan said.

He said a Central team would visit the flooded areas of district Sirsa on July 19 to assess the damage.

The Government of Punjab and Haryana have appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration in speeding up rescue and relief measures.

Meanwhile, the causeway on NH between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh at Kandwal at Chakki River was washed away due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and heavy vehicular traffic was disrupted and routed through Damtal, officials said.

The authorities were monitoring the construction of new bridge being built on the NH connecting Punjab and Haryana. PTI
