New Delhi: A recent study conducted by a six member team of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), has revealed that in rural India, out of 100 girls who are enrolled in Class 1, only one reaches Class 12.
Even in urban areas, out of 1,000 girls, only 14 reach Class 12, according to this report.
The report, which was authored in September this year, stated that 70.2 per cent of girls who enroll in schools across the country drop out before they finish Class X.
The report, titled World of India's Girls (WINGS), will soon be presented to the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The TISS team also made several recommendations in the report focusing mainly on making current policies about the girl child stringent. It suggested a National Policy for the girl child and calls for a ban on child marriage.
Dr Bindulakshmi, Associate Professor, TISS and one of the members of the team said that the data of for study was collected from the 2011 census and several other micro studies conducted by the government and organisations across the world.
It also pointed out that family pressure and lack of toilets in schools are two major causes for girls discontinuing their education.
Besides, it highlights discrimination against girl child and early marriage among major reasons why girls drop out rate is so high.
