Onion prices shoot up in Maharashtra, Gujarat

Nashik/Surat, Jan 24 : Prices of onion in the local wholesale and retail markets have shot up  due to low rainfull in the onion-producing belt of Nashik and Lasalgaon. Due to decline in supply, the average wholesale prices of onions in various Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) have increased by 32 to 40% in Nashik district.




In Surat APMC, prices of onion went up by Rs 15 in the last two days.

The average wholesale onion prices were around Rs. 1,175 to Rs. 1,251 per quintal last fortnight (on January 8), have increased to Rs. 1,650 a quintal

"The wholesale onion prices have increased up to 40% with the increase in the gap between demand and supplies. The prices have increased due to sudden rise in demand and decline
in supply. The arrival of onion, which was around 20,000 a quintal a day, two weeks ago in Lasalgaon APMC, has declined10,000 quintals a day," a senior official from Lasalgaon APMC  said.

The average wholesale onion prices in Lasalgaon APMC on Tuesday were recorded at Rs. 1,650 a quintal, against Rs. 1,250 a quintal on January 8.

The minimum and maximum average wholesale prices were recorded at Rs. 1,100 and Rs. 1,800 a quintal, respectively on Tuesday. Around 10,000 quintals of onions were auctioned
in Lasalgaon APMC on Tuesday.

The average wholesale onion prices in Pimpalgaon APMC on Tuesday were recorded at Rs. 1,650 a quintal, against Rs. 1,251 a quintal on January 8.

The minimum and maximum average wholesale prices of onions were recorded at Rs. 1,100 and Rs. 1,760 a quintal, respectively, on Tuesday. Around 12,000 quintals of onions were auctioned in Pimpalgaon APMC on Tuesday.

In Yeola APMC, the average wholesale onion prices were recorded at Rs. 1,650 a quintal on Tuesday, against Rs. 1,175 a quintal on January 8. The minimum and maximum average wholesale prices of onions were recorded at Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,755 a quintal, respectively, on Tuesday. Around 15,800 quintals of onions were auctioned in Yeola APMC on Tuesday.
