Tezpur, Assam, Dec 25: A labourer from Boko in Kamrup district was killed and 14 others were injured when the porch of an under-construction hotel building collapsed on Saturday evening near this town in Assam's Sonitpur district.
Sonitpur deputy commissioner Tapan Chandra Sarma told India TV, there were around 20labourers, of whom one died and 114 others have been hospitalized.
The mishap took place at around 6pm. The hotel is 1.5km from Mission Chariali, which is 6km from this town.
Army and Police personnel carried out rescue operations. The contractor who was carrying out the construction work absconded from the scene.
The deceased labourer has been identified as Ayub Khan from Boko,
Abdul Kalam, one of the injured labourers, who is undergoing treatment at Kanaklata civil hospital, said the porch collapsed because of the inferior quality of material used to build the hotel.
Sources said Himatsingka Pvt Ltd was constructing the the three-star hotel at the site for the past few years.
Last year, a fire broke out at the same hotel in which one labourer died and a few others were injured,
Three Mrityunjoy 108 ambulances from Tezpur town, Pachmile and Chariduar were rushed to the spot and several injured persons were taken to Kanaklata civil hospital at Tezpur.
Three other army ambulances were also pressed into service. The residents of the area also took some injured persons to hospital in private ambulances.Two JCBs were pressed into service by the Sonitpur district administration.
