Durgapur, WB, Mar 24 : Forty-two children got sick and one child died due to food poisoning after a mid-day meal was provided by a school here on Saturday.
After consuming the mid-day meal, the students complained of stomach ache and dizziness. They were rushed to a hospital in Panagarh town.
School teacher Sushmita Pathak said the illness could also be due some other reason as the children were unwell before consuming the meals.
“I don't think that anything was wrong with the food because what they ate was also consumed by everybody so I don't think that there was anything wrong with food. A few of the children had not been well a few days ago and a few others started complaining of stomach ache in the morning,” said Pathak.
The children were later moved to Durgapur Sub-Division hospital, which had a lack of space to accommodate the inflow of students suffering from food poisoning.
Hospital staff found their hands full with the large inflow of sick children.
Some children were treated while lying on the floor due to lack of space.
A Class 4 student Archana Hembram died while being treated in Durgapur Sub-Division hospital.
