New Delhi: Members of the Congress's student wing NSUI on Tuesday protested near External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's residence here accusing her of helping former IPL chief Lalit Modi in procuring travel documents.
”We want Sushma Swaraj to resign from her post as she helped Lalit Modi who has escaped out of India to avoid legal consequences. This is an embarrassment for the country,” Amrish Ranjan Pandey, spokesperson of the National Students Union of India, told IANS.
Police detained at least a score of protestors who demanded an SIT probe into the Lalit Modi controversy.
”We also want that a Supreme Court-monitored SIT probe should be launched in this connection,” he added.
The protestors raised slogans against Sushma Swaraj and accused the National Democratic Alliance government of protecting Modi.
”Ministers in the NDA government are helping Lalit Modi. Helping him on humanitarian ground is a false claim,” a protestor said.
Police detained soem 20-odd people, including NSUI national vice president Kumar Raja, and took them to Tughlak Road police station, Pandey told IANS.
The opposition has been gunning for Swaraj's removal after she admitted helping the former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner in securing documents to travel to Portugal in July last year for the treatment of his cancer-stricken wife.
