A Kuwait-based engineer 30-year-old Arif Hussein was arrested by Malad police for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman in July this year, reports DNA.

Arif Hussein was arrested from his Udaipur residence, after he managed to give the police a slip for the past four months. The police claimed to have kept his residence under surveillance since July.

The victim, an employee of a nationalised bank and a resident of Malad, had filed a complaint with the police, alleging that the suspect raped her by promising to marry her.

Police said that Hussein, who is from Udaipur, Rajasthan has been working with an IT firm in Kuwait for the past few years.

"On July 24, the main police control room got an alert call stating that a girl was inconsolably crying outside a hotel in Malad (West)," said deputy commissioner of police Sanjay Banerjee.

After receiving the call police brought the girl to the police station.

In her statement she told the police that she started chatting with Hussein on Yahoo messenger, and he claimed that his name was John. After a few months, they exchanged phone numbers and started talking to each other regularly.

"In July, Hussein came to Mumbai on his way to Kuwait. He decided to meet the girl and called her to a hotel in Malad," said Banerjee.

"The girl in her statement alleged that when she went to meet him, Hussein raped her in the hotel room. When she asked him about their marriage, Hussein allegedly threw her out of the room," said Banerjee.

"When the police went to the hotel, Hussein was already gone. But we found a laptop and a suitcase in which we got his address in Udaipur and his passport."

The police informed the immigration department and issued a look-out notice against the suspect.

"A police team visited Udaipur atleast three to four times, but returned empty-handed because the suspect was not staying in his own house," said Banerjee.

However, Hussein's  luck ran out when the police laid a trap near his house following a tip-off and arrested him. He was brought to Mumbai on Tuesday and produced before the magistrate who remanded him in police custody till December 17.
