Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal has cancelled all leave of policemen for a month starting September 15 because of Commonwealth Games, reports Indian Express.
Nearly 80,000 police officers will be on duty on the city roads during this time. Dadwal has ordered all his departments and officers that "there will be no leave from September 15 to October 15 for any officer because of Commonwealth Games" and "those leaves which were sanctioned earlier stand cancelled".
Dadwal's order states: "No leave should be sanctioned from September 15 to October 15 due to the Commonwealth Games 2010. Leaves already sanctioned for this period should stand cancelled and the individuals concerned be informed accordingly".
The order stands for all ranks of the Delhi Police. It has been sent to all districts, departments, units and police stations in the Capital; SHOs and the in-charge of units have informed their staff. A senior officer said "Only in case of an emergency situation will an officer be allowed to go on leave. Otherwise, everybody has to report for duty."
Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said, "This is one occasion where every rank has to perform its duty. This is being done so that we have maximum mobilisation in the city and people remain safe."
All police units, including the Special Cell, Crime Branch, Police Control Room, Traffic Police, Mounted Police, Armed Police, battalions, commando units, Economic Offences Wing, tourist police, special staff, Crime Against Women(CAW) cell, police stations and other staff of the Delhi Police, have been assigned specific tasks during the Games.
"The police stations which are not close to Games venues or routes will also check their areas, gather intelligence, talk to informers and do general policing work. Every rank, including IPS officers, DANIPS officers, and junior ranks will be reporting for duty," said the officer.
Senior officials said while even on occasions like Independence Day, Republic Day, Diwali and Holi, officers remain on leave, this time, no exception will be made for 30 days. "After the Games are over, leave can be provided in turns," the officer added. Over 21,000 officers have been specially trained for Games security.
