Bangalore: A member from Karnataka State Human Rights Commission yesterday called for closer engagement of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and state commissions for their effective functioning.
"....members and Chairmen of SHRC's have to be involved by the NHRC in its forums depending on the nature of the topic' for smoother and effective functioning of the mechanism," Karnataka State Human Rights Commission member Chandrashekar Gurubasappa Hungund said inaugurating a two-day workshop organised by Working Group on Human Rights in India and the UN (WGHR).
The regional workshop on UN human rights mechanisms with special focus on Universal Periodical Review (UPR) and Special Procedures is being attended by activists and NGOs from Southern states.
"I think NHRC should take such initiative, so that all stake holders from across the country can be involved on one platform in a bigger way that will help in shaping and strengthening of mechanisms to protect human rights in the country," he added.
In the workshop attendees will discuss a series of topics relating to UPR, recommendations that government of India has accepted, and monitoring the implementation of recommendations accepted.
