New Delhi, Aug 22: Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated throughout the country with devotion and fervour.
In Mumbai, hundreds of Dahi Handi contests are being organised, mostly in Worli, Dadar, Ghatkopar and Thane with prizes ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore on offer.
The Govindas train for nearly a month to create human pyramids to crack the pots containing curd and butter.
In Chembur Naka, the organisers have put on offer a goldplated pot with sixty gold coins to the winners of the contest.
In Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, daylong celebrations begun at the famous temples which will go on till well past midnight. Large crowds of devotees have thronged this holy city for the occasion.
Special tableaux depicting the birth of Lord Krishna have been arranged in most of the temples throughout India. In North India, families usually hold a daylong fast and celebrate Janmashtami at midnight.
