Mumbai, Apr 4: Narora Atomic Power plants situation in Uttar Pradesh were safe after northern India was today hit by an earthquake of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
Located in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, the two units of Narora Atomic Power station were approximately 400 to 500 km from the epicentre of the earthquake at Indo-Nepal border.
"The plants are safe and continued to operate safely," N Nagaich, Chief Executive, told PTI.
His remarks assume significance as questions were raised about the safety of Indian nuclear power plants from effects of quake and tsunami in the wake of the nuclear disaster in Japan.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had last month assured Parliament that all Indian atomic power plants were safe and yet he has ordered a review of their safety aspect in the backdrop of Japan's experience. PTI
