Muzaffarnagar: death toll goes up to 31, Ajit Singh, BJP leaders barred from entering riot-hit areas

Muzaffarnagar/Meerut: The death toll in the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli has gone up to 31, with stray incidents of stabbing and firing taking place in remote villages, where tension still persists. Union Civil

Meanwhile, violence spread in neighbouring district of Shamli where a 40-year-old priest of a place of worship was shot dead when he was on his way to Pumali village from Butrada under Babri police station, Shamli District Magistrate P K Singh said.




A youth was shot dead near a place of worship in Wajidpur in Baghpat on Sunday night. Four others were injured and tension spread in the village and neighbouring areas. Senior police offers rushed to the spot to defuse the situation.

In Muzaffarnagar town, residents complained of shortage of milk, vegetables and essential commodities, with curfew enforced since Saturday.

Curfew is in force in Civil Lines, Kotwali and Nai Mandi areas of Muzaffarnagar where the Army took out a mounted flag march on Sunday.

Security has been beefed up in Sisauli, Shahpur, Phugna, Kalapar and Dhaurakalan, where the situation is said to be tense.
