Muslim clerics object to new RBI coins with Mata Vaishno Devi inscription

New Delhi: Several Muslim clerics have raised objections to new Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins issued by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bearing inscriptions of Mata Vaishno Devi to commemorate the silver jubilee of

RBI  says, it is not involved in designing coins. "This is done by the government of India. We only monitor distribution", says RBI spokesperson Alpana Killawala adding it is a  normal procedure to release commemorative coins.

Commemorative coins have been issued  during events like  Commonwealth Games,  and the anniversaries of  scientist Homi Bhabha, Saint Alphonso, Khadi Village and Industries Commission, State Bank of India, ONGC, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dandi March, Swami Vivekananda, Motilal Nehru, Madan Mohan Malviya, Comptroller and Auditor General and the Kuka Movement.
