More than 1,000 villages in Assam flooded, 5 lakh people affected

Guwahati, Sep 21: The flood situation in Assam's eight districts has turned for the worse with more than one thousand villages inundated by the swirling Brahmaputra flood waters. More than five lakh people have been affected. 





Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Udalguri, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Dhemaji and Jorhat districts have been badly affected by floods.  Two youths were drowned in Dumduma of Tinsukia district.  

The Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Tinsukia district has been completely inundated with the main office of the park under water. Wild animals inside the park are facing a tough time for survival.  

The busy towns of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh have been flooded. The district SP office in Dibrugarh has been inundated by flood water, and office staff are doing their work with their feet in ankle-deep water.  

More than one hunded villages in Majuli island of Jorhat district have been inundated by the swirling Brahmaputra river.  

Rains since Thursday night in Rangia of Kamrup district has led to flood in Brahmaputra and its tributaries.  More than 400 villages have been inundated in Lakhimpur and Sonitpur districts.

Traffic on the National Highway 52 joining Dhemaji with Arunachal Pradesh has been disrupted as there have been breaches at several places.  

Eight relief camps have been set up so far housing more than 10,000 homeless people.  

The local administration has banned plying of boats in river Brahmaputra near Majuli and sec 144 prohibitory orders have been clamped. Udalguri, adjoining Arunachal Pradesh  is also facing the onslaught of floodwaters.  

Nearly one hundred villages in lower Assam on the India-Bhutan border have been affected by floods. Assam minister Bhupen Pegu said, relief efforts are being stepped out and rice is being distributed to the flood affected people.
