Mumbai: Retired IAS officer Maheshwar Sahu, known as the man behind the success of Narendra Modi's showpiece event ‘Vibrant Gujarat' summit has been appointed independent director in Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd.
A press release from RIL said: "The Board of Directors of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced the appointment of Maheswar Sahu, IAS (Retd), as an Independent Director on the Board with immediate effect. With this, the Board will comprise 14 members, with eight being Independent Directors."
Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman of the Board's Human Resources, Nomination and Remuneration Committee said, “We are delighted to have Maheswar Sahu join our Board. We look forward to his contributions in strengthening Reliance's journey of transformation and growth.”
Sahu holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and Masters in Public Administration from University of Birmingham, UK.
Sahu, 60, was Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mining) in Gujarat government.
Last year, Sahu had said: “The basic thing about Modi's model of governance is his vision and the priority he gives to creating systems. He tries to create an ecosystem of governance which helps to lead many initiatives in manufacturing, infrastructure growth and industry.”
Sahu has also served as Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation. As Additional CEO of Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority, he played a key role in highly acclaimed reconstruction and rehabilitation programme after the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat.
He worked as Joint Secretary in Department of Telecom, Government of India for about 4 years. After a brief stint in the Ministry of Environment & Forest as Joint Secretary, he took up a UN assignment as Director of an International Technology Centre.
