Srinagar: Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference yesterday called for a march to Shopian on Friday to protest against continued curfew and express solidarity with the people of the south Kashmir district.
"The decision was taken at a joint meeting of Hurriyat's executive, general and working committee members at Rajbagh headquarters of the separatist amalgam," a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement here.
Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had yesterday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government to lift curfew from Shopian, where five persons were killed by CRPF in separate incidents on September 7 and September 11.
While curfew was imposed in the town following widespread protests over the killing of four persons on September 8, it was lifted for a day on September 11.
However, protests again broke out in the town leading to the death of another person, prompting the authorities to reimpose the curfew.
The meeting, which was addressed by Mirwaiz through video conference as he was under house arrest since yesterday,expressed concern over the overall situation in Shopian due to continuous imposition of curfew and the hardships faced by the inhabitants, the spokesman said.
He said the meeting decided that Mirwaiz along with Hurriyat leadership and workers would march towards Shopian on September 20 to force the "anti-people" authorities to revoke curfew.
The meeting appealed to the people of the nearby districts like Kulgam, Pulwama and Anantnag to march towards Shopian on the day to express solidarity with the people of Shopian, the spokesman said.
