Milk production hit in Tamil Nadu by foot-and-mouth disease

Stating that many cows had died because of the disease, he said “we want compensation from the Government”.  

Meanwhile, a top official of the Animal Husbandry department claimed that the Government has been taking all measures to control the spread of the virus in the state.  

“We are taking all precautionary measures to control the outbreak. With the help of veterinary doctors and District Collectors we are conducting special camps to vaccinate cows”, the official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI.

However, he clarified there is no possibility of death of cattle, even those that are pregnant, as they have been vaccinated.

“We are conducting Gram Sabhas with doctors in particular areas to educate owners of cows about the vaccination and have kept the spread of virus in control”, he said.

He also clarified that government has stopped purchase of cows from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, for supply under free milch cow scheme, due to outbreak of the disease.

According to the policy note of the State Dairy Department, Tamil Nadu ranks eighth in milk production and is on its way towards achieving the Second White Revolution.

Tamil Nadu has 11,397 milk producers' co-operative societies, including 1,722 milk producers' women co-operative societies and 62 milk consumer co-operative societies.
