BSP chief Mayawati on Thursday criticized the suspension of opposition MPs and mimicry of the Rajya Sabha chairman amid protests in and outside Parliament. Her statement came at a time when I.N.D.I.A bloc members and the government are at loggerheads over security breach of parliament row and mimicry issue.
"Our party believes that the suspension of around 150 MPs in the current Parliament session is not a good work or milestone for the Opposition or the Government. For the Parliamentary history, this incident is very unfortunate and a blow to people's trust," she said.
Meanwhile, the video of the mimicry of the Vice President by the suspended MPs on Parliament premises is also inappropriate and indecent, the former UP CM added.
"It is essential to protect the democracy and country's Parliamentary traditions from being put to shame through such incidents of differences between the Government and Opposition. Passing of essential Bills in an Opposition-free Parliament is also not a good precedent," she added.
I.N.D.I.A bloc MPs held a march against the government from Vijay Chowk to Parliament reiterating their over suspension of MPs. The BJP also held protest against the mimicry incident in which TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicked Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar terming it an insult to farmers and constitutional post. The streak of suspension of opposition MPs continued on Wednesday. The Congress alleged that more than 140 I.N.D.I.A bloc MPs were "thrown out" of both Houses just so Union Home Minister Amit Shah could get three "draconian" bills passed in the Lok Sabha without any informed dissent.
Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed three key bills – the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill – that seek to overhaul the criminal justice system. Shah asserted that the government's focus with these bills is on delivering speedy justice rather than handing down punishment.
