New Delhi: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with three Service Chiefs -- Chief of the Army Staff, Gen Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral RK Dhowan, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Marshal Arup Raha -- today paid tributes to martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the iconic India Gate in the central Delhi on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, marking India's victory over Pakistan in 1971.
On this day, the Pakistani forces led by General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, had surrendered unconditionally before the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, led by General Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka after their defeat in the war.
The end of the war also resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
Special programmes have been organised at the headquarters of the Eastern Command at the Fort William in Kolkata to celebrate the day.
The day is being celebrated as 'Victory Day' in Bangladesh and 'Vijay Diwas' in India.
