Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday offered to help the Bengali widows in Vrindavan to resettle in Kolkata where they are currently on visit.

“If anyone of you want to come back to Bengal, let me know. We would be happy to support you here. It will not be a problem for us,” Banerjee said after meeting the widows at Samaj Sevika Club here.

Nearly 50 widows from Mathura and Vrindavan visited the city for the first time after they were abandoned by their families years ago.

They have refused to return to their marital homes.  Their visit is part of an effort by Sulabh International to remove the stigma attached to their lives as part of Supreme Court directive.

The chief minister gifted each of them with a saree and in return accepted gifts like copies of ‘Bhagwad Gita' and some other items from the old women, who flew in here on Sunday.

During their stay in Kolkata, the old women visited some community puja pandals and inaugurated the well-known Singhi Park puja.
