New Delhi, Oct 12: BJP today said government's declaration that it would make the Lokpal a constitutional body is a diversionary and delaying tactic as the Congress-led dispensation is not serious about establishing a strong and effective ombudsman.

“Law Minister Salman Kurshid has said that Lokpal will be a Constitutional body. As far as we know, every law is contitutional. The whole country and the opposition want that a strong and effective Lokpal should be established. The government draft of the Lokpal Bill was one fit to be put in the dustbin,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

He maintained that government was only making such statements to buy time.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had first mooted the idea of making the Lokpal a constitutional body on the lines of the Election Commission.

“Congress wants to delay the Lokpal issue. Even the debate that the proposed Lokpal should be made a constitutional authority is a diversionary tactic and a time-killing activity adopted by the Congress to delay the establishment of a Lokpal,” Javadekar said.

He insisted that BJP wants an effective Lokpal Bill by bringing an amended Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament.

“The government wants to run away from this commitment and that is why it is raising such diversionary issues,” he said. PTI
