Thane: A major fire broke out at a chemical factory of the Ambernath in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) near Thane Monday night.

The incident took place at around 10 pm.

Around 15 fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the blaze under control, a fire official said here, adding that plumes of smoke filled the area as the flames engulfed the entire chemical unit.

It took over four hours to douse the fire completely.

The blaze engulfed two more nearby buildings, locals said.

According to police, the incident took place after a blast rocked a reactor inside the factory.

Other factories in the area were evacuated immediately as a safety measure.
