Khandwa (MP):  At least six persons have died due to heavy rains in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, a senior official said here today.

The administration has sounded a high alert in the district and declared a holiday today in government and private schools, he said.

“Six people lost their lives due to heavy rains in Khandwa district, while one person is still missing,” Khandwa Collector MK Agrawal told reporters here.  Three people were swept away in an overflowing drain near Manjhagarh village while they tried to cross it on a motorcycle.

Later, bodies of two of them were found and identified as Premu and Sadiq, while a search is on to trace the third missing person named Ashish.

Similarly, two persons were swept away in the waters on the Khandwa-Moondi road near Sinhada village, the collector said, adding that efforts are on to identify them.  Two others identified as Vicky and Abhishek were also killed because of heavy rains, at their residence in Adarsh Nagar area.

Age of these victims are yet to be ascertained, though it is known that all of them are adults, the official said.  Meanwhile, heavy rains severely affected normal life in Khandwa town and the railway track between Khandwa and Itarsi was flooded with water affecting rail traffic on the busy route, he said.
