In a strategic move ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party has announced Tsering Namgyal as its candidate from the Ladakh constituency. The decision to nominate Tsering Namgyal underscores Congress’s intent to compete strongly in Ladakh amid the upcoming elections. NC’s earlier decision to yield the Ladakh seat to Congress under an alliance agreement has encountered a twist with the nomination of Haji Hanifa Jan, marking a deviation from the expected formula.
Earlier today, Tsering Namgyal of the Congress filed his nomination, while Haji Hanifa Jan emerged as the joint candidate of Congress and National Conference (NC) in Kargil district.
Candidate background
Tsering Namgyal, hailing from Leh and serving as the leader of the opposition in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, is pitted against Haji Hanifa Jan, a prominent Shia Muslim figure from Kargil.
Party stand
Congress stalwart Rigzin Zora confirmed Tsering Namgyal as the official Congress candidate, indicating the party’s resolve in Ladakh’s electoral fray.
BJP’s presence
Adding to the electoral mix, BJP’s Tashi Gyalson filed his nomination on Wednesday, while the current BJP MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, has been sidelined, leaving speculation over his potential independent candidature. The unfolding dynamics set the stage for a riveting electoral battle as Ladakh braces for the Lok Sabha elections.
