Kolkata: The Left parties Saturday took out a rally in the central part of the city to condole the death of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
Around 3,000 leaders and workers of various Left parties walked shoulder to shoulder from the base of Lenin's statue on Lenin Sarani to College Square.
The silent procession saw the participation of leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India, All India Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party and other Left outfits.
CPI-M state secretariat members Mohammed Salim and Rabin Deb,, state committee member Asim Dasgupta, and RSP leader Manoj Bhattacharya were among those who took part in the rally.
The processionists carried Mandela's pictures, and held aloft posters and banners eulogising the role played by Mandela, who demolished the much despised apartheid policy of racial segregation and went on to become South Africa's first black president.
