Srinagar: Two militants, one of them a self-styled district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, were killed in separate gunbattles with security forces in Kashmir Valley yesterday.
Javed Ahmad alias Salfi, a “district commander” of Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in a gunfight in Shamspora village at Qazigund in Anantnag district, police said.
Acting on a tip-off that some militants were hiding in the village, security forces cordoned off the entire area and launched a search operation.
Militants fired at security forces who retaliated and in the ensuing gunbattle, the ultra was killed.
The house, where the militant had taken shelter, was destroyed in the operation.
An unidentified ultra was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Dadsara area in Pulwama district yesterday evening.
Security forces conducted searches in the area after receiving information about presence of some ultras there.
The militants fired at security forces who retaliated triggering a gunbattle in which an ultra was killed, they said.
The other militants fled towards nearby Mir Mohalla, police said.
The area has been cordoned off to prevent the ultras from escaping.
