Srinagar: Security forces Wednesday shot dead a suspected separatist guerrilla in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, officials said.
Police sources said the motorcycle-borne guerrilla was killed in Dalwan village of Budgam, 45 km from here.
A defence spokesman later said an army patrol was moving towards Dalwan Wednesday afternoon and came under fire. The soldiers returned the fire in which one unidentified gunman was killed.
One rifle, one rifle magazine, 13 rounds, one grenade and a PAN card were recovered from the dead man. The PAN card was in the name of Tauseef Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Hassan, a resident of Pulwama.
Police took possession of the body and were trying to ascertain the identity of the slain guerrilla.
Meanwhile, residents held a protest in the area after the incident, in which five people were injured.
