Kolkata: One of the oldest static formations of the Indian Army, the Headquarters Bengal Area, which participated with distinction in World War II and in the 1962 and 1971 wars, Saturday turned 120.


On the occasion, the General Officer Commanding, Bengal Area Lt. Gen. Raman Dhawan, addressed all ranks of the formation in a special Sainik Sammelan.

Raised as Bengal Command at Fort William on March 1, 1895, by Lt. Gen. W.K. Ells, the headquarters also supports logistics requirements of fighting formations and units of the Eastern Command in war and peace.

It has also been providing assistance to the West Bengal government during calamities and disasters.
