Srinagar: Avalanche warning has been given for several snow-bound areas of Kashmir in places like Kargil, Tangdhar, Kupwara, Baramulla, Sopore, Anantnag, Gurez, Nowgam, Uri and Sonmarg.


Authorities have issued moderate to high danger avalanche warning in Drass-Kargil sector and medium danger avalanche warning for Tangdhar, Kupwara Baramulla, Sopore, Anantnag, Gurez, Nowgam, Uri and Sonmarg for the next 24 hours.

People living in these areas have been advised not to move out of venture into steep avalanche-prone slopes and remove snow from their rooftops to avoid any casualty due to house collapse.

Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Monday as the Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed for traffic for the third consecutive day.

Met officials said the weather would remain dry for the next 3-4 days.

“We are trying to clear the stranded vehicles. No vehicle was allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu or vice-versa,” said IGP Traffic, Muneer Ahmad Khan. Nearly 250 stranded vehicles moved towards Srinagar and around 200 crossed to Jammu side, he added

Several places on the highway including Jawahar Tunnel, Patnitop, Lower Munda received fresh snowfall on Monday.

“Any decision to open the road would be taken on Tuesday after proper assessment. Once the road opens there would be one-way traffic only,” the IGP said.

The state government has set up control room and has asked people to verify the status of highway before starting their journey.

Light to moderate snowfall was reported from Islamabad (Anantnag), Pahalgam, Kokernag, Banihal, Patnitop, Bhaderwah and Ladakh till Monday afternoon

Srinagar and some other towns of Kashmir witnessed fresh rains Monday afternoon.

The ski resort of Gulmarg received around 1.25 cm of snow and there was three degrees drop in temperature as compared to minus 6.6 degrees Celsius the previous night.

Pahalgam received 20 cm of snow and the mercury settled at a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius, as against minus 2.4 degrees Celsius the previous night while  Kokernag and Kupwara recorded 12.4 mm rainfall.
