New Delhi: The beautiful group of Andaman and Nicobar islands are located at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
It comprises two island groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, separated by the 10°N parallel, with the Andamans to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobars to the south.
The islands are famous for the Kaala Pani (Cellular jail) which was used by the British to exile political prisoners to the remote islands.
Many freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt suffered torturous treatments in the jail.
It was a brutal punishment for the convicts who were put into Kaala Pani as they were socially excluded, chained and lived like animals.
Many died in the cellular jail premises. Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument.
