60-year old Mumbai woman to compete in 2-km long open sea swimming contest

Mumbai: A 1953 born,  60 year old Mumbai swimmer Swapna Wani is all set to compete in a prestigious 2-km long open sea swimming competition organized by Indian Navy in Mumbai tomorrow.This swimming contest  is

Wani developed her love for the sport at the age of 35 and till date she has won 74 medals in this sport. She won three gold medals on October 31 at the 10th National Master's Aquatic Championship — grabbing pole position in 200 metres (individual medley), 200 metres (freestyle) and 200 metres (butterfly).Now she will be swimming in the Navy's competition in the 50 years and above category.




The competition will held at at the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Colaba . The race begins at 6 am on November 23. Wani will be there at the scheduled reporting time of 5 am, ready to test the waters, literally.

The oldest contestant in the cotest is Bakulben Patil of Surat, born on October 26, 1944. The oldest man is Balkrishna Patil born on August 27, 1948. There are four women in the veteran's category, Wani is the oldest of them.
